Why are you asking Silly questions ?

Silly questions-It is very simple to be a difficult person, but it is difficult to be a simple person.

Why are you asking silly questions ?A lot of times an adolescent would ask a question that has a very obvious answer from the teachers’ or parents’ point of view. The most common mistakes adults make when they face such a situation is

  • Getting annoyed and scolding the adolescents for not having their wits with them or
    • “Use your mind” or even worse -“do you have a brain ?”
  • Start imitating the behavior in a childish manner, and repeatedly ask them questions that have obvious answers, to make them understand how “silly they sounded” when they asked that obvious question.

Why are you asking Silly questions ?

With this behavior, we send the signal to the adolescent to think like us. And if they aren’t doing so, they are being silly. This not only stifles the child’s curiosity, but also kills their confidence for the next time when they have another question. They would hesitate to communicate with you and if it happens repeatedly, they would rather stay silent instead of sharing anything with you. This is when they start becoming vulnerable to bad influences and negative emotions.

How can we forget they are in their growing up journey? How can we forget ,even we have faced such situations when we were growing up? Why do we expect them to understand everything exactly as we want, in exactly the time we want to spend with them , without spending any energy on them ? Is it really an issue with the adolescent or is it an issue with the adult ?

The right way is to understand there are no “silly” queries. We should repeat the answer as many time as it is required – with empathy and care. This will ensure that the child trusts you and that you will be always there for answering their queries.

Empathy is a core trait that is important be be practiced and taught.
