Who are Counsellors
Counsellors are qualified professionals , trained to conduct counselling and therapy for the adolescents.
A counsellor is the bridge of trust for the child
Due to various problems and stress we experience in day to day life, the need for guidance and counselling is vital to help individuals handle situations and problems in a better way.
The Counselling involves a special type of relationship between the counsellor and the person seeking help.
Counselling is a helping relationship involving three entities –
- Someone seeking help.
- Someone willing to give help who is capable or trained to help.
- A setting that permits giving and receiving help.
Counselling is the human connection between a counsellor and the child, both face to face and in each other’s mind. A trained counsellor uses different counselling strategies which they find appropriate to the counselling session.
To understand counselling let’s take an example. Think of a child standing on bank of a deep river. The river symbolizes all their problems. The other bank is the place that they have to reach. To reach the other side they have to overcome the flow and depth of the river of problems. The counsellor is the bridge of trust for the child. The child still has to cross the river themselves, but the counsellor shows them the the way.
The Counselling Session
Purpose of counselling is helping individuals develop self awareness and adjust to life
strategies and schooling problems.
Children if given a reasonably rich environment and free opportunity to learn, will develop on their own. As adult we need to make the efforts to understand them, provide for them and respect them as individuals.
During one counselling session, the counsellor may use more than one strategy. The main purpose of counselling is assisting the adolescents to develop personal skills and inner strength so that they can create their own and others lives. We know that the counsellor is the bridge of trust for the child – but this bridge that counsellor makes is done pillar by pillar , strengthening the foundation with each step.
Counsellors assist clients to help themselves.
